How to split the costs of a weekend away with friends

Accommodation, groceries, fuel, activities: the simple way to split the costs of a weekend away with friends, before, during and after, with no spreadsheet and no chasing.

A weekend away with friends quickly adds up to a few hundred euros: in France, a shared travel expense averages around €267, according to Tricount (in French). The problem isn’t the amount, it’s who pays for what, when, and who owes how much afterwards. Here’s a three-step method to keep money from spoiling the weekend.

Before you leave: agree on three things

Five minutes of talking before you go saves hours of maths afterwards.

  1. The budget: give a range per person for accommodation and activities. Everyone knows what to expect, and nobody is faced with a done deal.
  2. The split rule: equal shares for everything is the simplest and fairest option for a weekend. Exceptions (a friend arriving on Saturday, another who doesn’t drink) get decided now, not at the till.
  3. Who books what: one person for the accommodation, another for the car or the tickets. Don’t let everything fall on the same person.

During the weekend: settle as you go

The classic trap is the friend who pays for everything, then does one big calculation on Sunday night. By then, nobody feels like counting, and the receipts have vanished.

Settle each expense when it happens: Friday’s groceries, Saturday’s dinner, the fuel for the drive home. Everyone sends their share straight away, or the next person pays for the following expense. The smaller the gap stays, the easier it is to settle.

Expenses not to forget

  • The accommodation, often booked weeks ahead: it’s the biggest amount, and the easiest to forget when settling up.
  • Transport: fuel, tolls, parking. Split it between the passengers of each car, not necessarily the whole group.
  • Groceries and impromptu drinks.
  • Activities: bike rental, entry tickets, surf lessons.
  • The little things: the deposit, the cleaning fee, the bottle left for the hosts.

Back home: settle within 24 hours

If there are still accounts to settle, do it by Monday at the latest. A clear message in the group is enough: the total, everyone’s share, how to pay. After a week, it turns into chasing, and that’s when it gets awkward.

What if nobody fronted the money?

All this organising exists because one or two people pay for the others. That’s what we want to get rid of with squenta: you create a squenta for the weekend, your friends join it by link or QR code, and every expense is split equally and paid by each person at checkout, from their own bank, with no fees. No more settling up on Sunday night. squenta is coming in 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Should we split equally or by what each person actually spent?

For a weekend, equal shares are almost always simpler and go down better. Splitting by actual spend makes sense for big differences, like a friend who only comes for one night.

How do we handle a friend who arrives late or leaves early?

Decide before you leave: they pay their share of the accommodation for the nights they're there, and their share of every expense made while they're around.

Should we set up a kitty before we leave?

It's an option, but it makes everyone pay upfront and often leaves money to hand back. Paying for each expense when it happens is simpler.
